{"id":741,"date":"2024-07-18T15:16:41","date_gmt":"2024-07-18T15:16:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/upliftindy.org\/?p=741"},"modified":"2024-07-18T15:16:47","modified_gmt":"2024-07-18T15:16:47","slug":"after-a-neighbors-hard-fall-shepherd-and-morales-group-stepped-up-to-ensure-her-long-term-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/upliftindy.org\/index.php\/2024\/07\/18\/after-a-neighbors-hard-fall-shepherd-and-morales-group-stepped-up-to-ensure-her-long-term-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"After a neighbor\u2019s hard fall, Shepherd and Morales Group stepped up to ensure her long-term safety"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The ambulance crew already had arrived and was treating a patient outside her home on the near Eastside when Shane Hardwick, a paramedic and member of Shepherd Community Center\u2019s Shalom Project team, pulled up to the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c(The patient) had fallen off her porch and landed face first onto a concrete pad,\u201d Hardwick said. \u201cThere was a significant amount of facial trauma reported by the ambulance crew. There was a pool of blood on the ground, several of her teeth had been knocked out, and her nose was badly damaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the ambulance crew left to take the woman to a hospital, Hardwick learned that the patient was a developmentally delayed adult whose elderly mother was her primary caregiver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also noticed a significant safety issue &#8212; the front porch lacked handrails. It was another accident waiting to happen without an intervention. So, Hardwick contacted staff at Shepherd to ask for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn true Shepherd fashion, they said they would be happy to help,\u201d Hardwick said. \u201cIn less than a week, they were not only able to source the funding for the project, but they also scheduled a group of carpenters and handymen to do the project.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shepherd Director of Volunteers Donna Alexander said 12 volunteers from the Morales Group, <a href=\"https:\/\/moralesgroup.net\/\"><strong>Morales Group Staffing<\/strong><\/a> + <a href=\"https:\/\/accion.work\/\"><strong>Acci\u00f3n Performance<\/strong><\/a>, purchased the supplies and built the guardrails to make the front porch safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDespite receiving devastating injuries and a long path to recovery, she will one day come home,\u201d Hardwick said. \u201cWhen she does, she will be able to safely sit on her porch without fear of falling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Morales Group is a long-term partner with Shepherd that serves neighbors in a variety of ways.
