40 Years of Shepherd: Rooted in Partnerships

February 27, 2026

From the day Shepherd Community started 40 years ago, it was rooted in partnership. Partners make Shepherd possible. From financial gifts to volunteers to in-kind donations to facility usage to experiences, our partners use their strengths, resources, and capabilities to help Shepherd do more than we can do on our own. Our partners range from government entities to other nonprofit organizations to foundations to corporations and churches. Each partner has played a key role in Shepherd Community over the last 40 years.

In the early years of Shepherd, a partnership with Horner Electrical made it possible for Shepherd to have a building.

In August of 2003 when O’Brien Toyota decided to purchase advertising space in TIME magazine, they instead brought awareness to Shepherd.

The Pacers have donated tickets and created a basketball court on the playground.

The Colts have donated tickets, brought players – including Peyton Manning and Tony Dungy – to meet our kids, and helped pay for our Shepherd minibuses.

Chick-fil-A has donated meals and wrapped box trucks.

The Lilly Foundation created an endowment to help Shepherd become more financially sustainable.

Gleaners and Second Helpings have partnered to feed our hungry neighbors.

UIndy brings teachers to serve and tutor our students in After-School.

Traders Point Christian Church donates truckloads of brand-new toys as well as volunteers for our Christmas Store every year. Southland Community Church, Emmanuel Church, Genesis Church, Redeemer Presbyterian Church, Grace Church, Northview Church, College Park Church, and many more churches have partnered to bring work groups, teen volunteers, run events, provide holiday food totes, and invest in Shepherd over the last 40 years.

Tom & Julie Wood Family Foundation, United Way of Central Indiana, CareSource, NBA Foundation, Superior Industrial Solutions, White Oak Foundation, The Mind Trust, MHS, Messer Construction, and many others give funding to support our programs, services, and events.

These are just a few of the thousands of partners that make Shepherd Community possible every year. Every dollar and gift given, every hour volunteered, and every moment experienced are thanks to the generosity of our incredible partners.

Their commitment, love, and divine sacrifice has grown Shepherd’s ability to serve over 10,000 neighbors annually for the last 40 years. As we embark on the next 40 years of Shepherd, we cannot wait to continue to foster new and existing partnerships as we continue to break the cycle of poverty in our community together.
