40 Years of Shepherd: Walking Alongside Our Neighbors: A Heart Like Jesus

March 28, 2026

Throughout the New Testament, Jesus tells His followers that the Holy Spirit is coming. Depending on the translation, you’ll read different English words for the Holy Spirit: the Comforter, the Advocate, the Counselor, Helper, Keeper, and Encourager. Each of these words is taken from the Greek word “Parakletos” meaning to walk alongside, guide, care, and intercede for.

When Shepherd first started Family Ministries in 2007 (now known as Family Engagement, a single program of family services and neighborhood engagement), it was with a heart to intentionally care for our families and the surrounding community as a reflection of the Holy Spirit. From this program birthed other programs and services such as employment and job training, continuing education, social work, housing, health, moms clubs, legal clinic, tax services, and more. Shepherd’s desire has always been to live life with our neighbors, helping to advocate and navigate alongside them as a trusted friend and family. Neighbors like Sarah*:

When we first met Sarah, she was living in unsafe conditions, battling depression, and frequently calling 9-1-1 for non-emergencies. She was overwhelmed and ready to give up. Shepherd met her with compassion — helping her move into safe senior housing, access proper healthcare, and receive healthy, home-delivered meals.

Months later, Sarah visited us with a bright smile and new energy. She had gained healthy weight and found hope again.

“I wouldn’t be here today without Shepherd. I know I am loved and cared about. Thank you!”

Relationships and connection truly change lives — one neighbor at a time.

In 2020, Shepherd launched an initiative called Paracletes, which put greater intentionality into building one-on-one relationships with our neighbors through weekly phone calls, texts, emails, notes, and face-to-face visits to make sure more neighbors like Sarah knew they could count on Shepherd.

Just as our Good Shepherd cares for us, we want our neighbors to know that they are seen, loved, and cared for, for many years to come. In all walks of life and in every season, we will walk beside them, cheering them on, and guiding their families out of poverty for the next 40 years.
